The six steps to internet success

Every design house and web designer has their own angle on what makes a web site successful and how they'll help you to be a success with their web design. However, success on the net is not down to one or two flavour of the month approaches. Nor is it rocket science: you simply have to know the fundamentals and deal with them. As you work through the finer points - go back to the fundamentals!

Step 1 - You have to be found

Your site will be of little value to you if nobody knows that you're out there. Your site needs to be on the first page or two of any logical search which potential customers or visitors are likely to make.

I know ways to achieve this, such as getting your site linked from prominent businesses/organisations so that you ride on their "coat-tails", or structuring a site so that it is "search engine optimised".

Step 2 - Your site must not repel your visitors

You only have a few seconds to keep a visitor to your site. If your site is not appropriately designed and laid out, if it's too cluttered or the text is cramped, it will look like too much work and visitors quickly leave.

Step 3 - Visitors must know that they can get what they want easily

Visitors will also work this out quickly. They need to see that everything they want to know is immediately accessible to them and that their quest for more information is easily achieved.

This ensures that your site attracts people to your business and organisation who are ready to engage with you.

Step 4 - Don't leave anybody out

Your site needs to display consistently across the widest possible range of browsers. If your site isn't clear and consistent, you wont look professional or you may repel potential customers with a "broken" site.

Step 5 - Keep things clean

Some designers are so wrapped up in designing great looking sites that they forget who and what they are designing for. They let the design get in the way of the message.

Your message should dictate the nature of the design, content, navigation, graphic elements and any animated material to appear on your site. Every aspect of your web site should be carefully crafted to draw every visitor into a full experience of your message: to invite or help your visitors to make a buying or participating decision.

Step 6 - They have to remember you

Typographers and magazine editors have long known that there are strategies to not only ensure that visitors will bother to read your information, but that they will actually remember what they have read.

The literature on how to achieve this is out there, but it seems that few web designers have read it or understood it. I have. It's all in the layout of sites and use of text. I will work with you to ensure that you come up to scratch in this area too.
